The 21st century is experiencing a very rapidly changing world - a change that affects all areas of life.
In almost all European societies, we are witnessing a social, political and cultural divide that is deeper than ever before. In recent years, this division led to discrimination, racism, xenophobia and extremism in violence and terrorism.
We are witnessing a major change in the world of work: the technological revolution has a fundamental impact on the profession and the workplace – the world of work requires self-determined, critical and creative people.
These changes have a great impact on education and will have it even more than ever in education for democracy. An examination of the democratic values for living together in 21st century Europe is essential. Education has an important role to play in this process.
The general goal of Edu4Democracy is the exchange of the partners about their practical experiences in the field of student representation and student participation. In order to achieve this goal, one visit to a school in each of the partner countries will take place and inspiring examples will be processed into media tools for use in teacher training as well as in school and teaching development in all partner countries. All tested and revised products are made accessible on this project homepage.
In addition, a matrix in the sense of guided observation will be created, which will provide the basis for an evaluation.
A further project product is the compilation of observations and exchanges with local partners, which at the same time expresses the needs of teachers for teacher training, guidance and support in practice.
A special focus of the joint work is on teacher competence, which enables the students to prepare for their lives as active democratic citizens and future actors in the European labour market.
With ten partners from Germany, Finland, Croatia, Poland and Spain, the project ensures the cultural and geographical diversity as well as the necessary different profiles and competences of all those involved: teacher training institutes, universities, an NGO as a member of a European network and one school from each of the partner countries.
A better understanding will lead to greater commitment.
Sabine Rohmann, Pedagogical Institute of Rhineland-Palatinate
The project partners are committed to a longer-term dissemination of the project results in hope that a better understanding among all stakeholders of the need for democratic values education, especially in the field of student representation and student participation, will contribute to the further development of sustainable democratic societies in Europe.
